The luxurious fur of the Northern Fur Seal has always commanded a very high price. In the late 19th century, hunting extended from on land to the sea, resulting in a sharp drop in their population. Countries that realized the potential danger established a limit on the number that could be caught. Eventually, hunting in sea waters was banned in 1911, and their numbers have slowly recovered.
Although hunting is no longer allowed, they continue to disappear...
All forms of hunting were banned in 1985, including those of which occurred on land. Even so, their population continues to decline. Experts argue that excessive fishing has caused a food supply shortage for the Northern Fur Seal. Excessive fishing is considered a threat to various life forms.
