In the past, large numbers of Northern Fur Seals were hunted for their fur. Although hunting has since been prohibited, they are in danger of extinction, but for a different reason.
The Northern Fur Seal lives in the North Pacific Ocean. During the summer months the seals come to the Commander Islands and Pribilof Islands to breed and bear children.
The Northern Fur Seal eats all types of fish, including salmon, trout, cod, and Pacific Saury. They also like to eat cuttlefish.
Males weigh almost four times more than females, which is the largest difference by sex than any other mammal.

The luxurious fur of the Northern Fur Seal has always commanded a very high price. In the late 19th century, hunting extended from on land to the sea, resulting in a sharp drop in their population. Countries that realized the potential danger established a limit on the number that could be caught. Eventually, hunting in sea waters was banned in 1911, and their numbers have slowly recovered.
